Getting Started

Spellbound & Shelved drops you into a wizard-academy library that has already lost. The floor is a mosaic of spellbooks. The door can read OPEN. A few red-hatted gnomes are already bowing to pick up covers, and a rack on the far wall may still sit behind chains. This page is the first-hour checklist so you do not spend your first diamonds on the wrong branch of the upgrade web.

The game is free on Steam (app 5097840), single-player, and built for a 1–3 hour run you can save at any time. Minimum specs are gentle: 64-bit Windows 10, macOS 11, or Linux with glibc 2.28+, 2 GB RAM, 500 MB disk, and a mouse. There is a Touch Only option if you prefer a tablet-style click. After the title screen — isometric library, New Game, Settings — you are the manager, not the shelver.

What you are looking at

The camera is isometric. A purple moon-and-star runner splits the room. Circular rugs (red, green, gold, slate) hold desks with crystals. Bookcases glow with blue, violet, amber, and rose flames. Gold is the yellow diamond in the top-left. Top-right icons open achievements, settings, and help. Bottom-right is a compass-like control for the camera. The activity log along the bottom is not flavor you can ignore: it is how you learn gnome names and when a reader just paid you.

Early gold can sit at 20 diamonds while the floor is still a blizzard. That is normal. Do not assume the run is broken. Income arrives when readers visit, and readers only visit while the door is OPEN. That is the trap and the tutorial at once.

First five minutes

  1. Confirm the door plaque. If it says OPEN, customers will arrive, pay, and yank filed books back onto the boards. If you need a clean look at gnome paths, flip toward CLOSED using the door-sign guide once you have a starter pile of gold.
  2. Read the log. You should see names such as Fizzwick, Bramble, Nutmeg, and Pippin filing titles. Those are your workers, not enemies.
  3. Do not panic at chained shelves. The store lists 15 shelf wings locked until you buy the chains off. That is a gold sink, not a bug. See shelf wings.
  4. Open the upgrade web with U when you have a little surplus. Pan, zoom, hover. Spend on movement and filing speed before decorative leaves. The upgrade tier list is the shopping list.
  5. Optional clicks: snatch tip coins before they fade, pep-talk a gnome into a sprint, usher a reader who is loitering. None of these are required to finish. Details live in tips.

What not to do on hour one

Do not keep the door OPEN for the entire first hour just because gold feels good. Readers are six unlockable types — Apprentice, Frog Scholar, Ghost, Owl, Gnome Tourist, and Cat — and each visit is income and entropy. A Cat such as Lom the Cat can award a chunky burst (screenshots show +600 for a one-sitting read) while scattering more covers.

Do not ignore CLOSED time. Gnomes shelve faster when nobody is pulling books down. The walkthrough uses CLOSED as the tool that actually lowers the 6,655 count.

Do not hunt codes. There are no official promo codes at launch. Diamonds come from readers and tips.

How this connects to the rest of the wiki

After this page, read How to Play so the HUD sticks, then controls if you need the mouse and U map. Then sit with the door-sign strategy until OPEN/CLOSED feels like a budget, not a panic button. When you know the gnomes by name, the gnome roster and reader roster become reference, not homework.

System culture note: needmoar.games is also the studio behind the needmoar.games ranking site, and Spellbound & Shelved sat as a fan-boosted “king of the hill” title on that site at launch. That is community taste, not a gameplay unlock. Your library still has 6,655 books. Hire, flip, unchain, and let the hats waddle.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for the idle library.

Do I shelve books myself in Spellbound & Shelved?

No. The store text is blunt: no manual shelving. You hire gnomes, upgrade them, unchain wings, and flip the door. See How to Play.

Why is my gold stuck near 20 at the start?

Readers have not paid you yet, or the door is CLOSED. OPEN the door when you need diamonds, then CLOSE it to let gnomes catch up — full loop in the door-sign guide.

What are the chains on the side wall?

Locked shelf wings. Buy the chains off when current racks are the bottleneck, not the moment you see them.
