Spellbound & Shelved Reader Types Tier List
Six unlockable visitors — they pay, then they unshelve.
Spellbound & Shelved has six unlockable customer types. Steam achievements name them as they arrive: Apprentice, Frog Scholar, Ghost, Owl, Gnome Tourist, and Cat. The store is explicit: they pay for the privilege of pulling your hard-shelved books back onto the floor. This tier list ranks them for a manager who wants the last book gone, not a gift-shop high score.
Full bios and log quotes live on the reader roster. Rankings here assume you already flip the door sign on purpose.
S — Worth the entropy when you need gold
Apprentice. First unlock (An Apprentice Appears). Predictable, small, teaches the loop. You want them during Phase 1 fundraising because they probably cannot dump a Cat-sized mosaic on a two-rack room.
Owl (late, if speed is live). Owls read. Reading pays. If your gnomes already sprint, an Owl is a clean diamond source. If your gnomes still waddle, demote the Owl to B for that save.
A — Good on a grown library
Frog Scholar. The name is a joke; the job is a mid-run visitor. A-tier once a couple of wings exist. Still usher if they dawdle after CLOSED.
Gnome Tourist. Thematically they should respect the hats. Mechanically they are still customers. A-tier for gold, A-tier for chaos if you leave them OPEN too long. Fun log lines, not a reason to abandon CLOSED.
B — Jackpots with debris
Cat. A Cat Appears is a milestone. Lom the Cat can print +600 for reading On the Nature of Levitation in one sitting. That is S-tier money and C-tier manners. Rank: B overall, S only when you have carry/speed and empty slots. Usher if they linger on the gold rug after you have the payout.
Ghost. Atmosphere is free; unshelving is not. B-tier because they arrive later (achievement-gated) when you should already know how to CLOSE. Do not OPEN forever hoping to photograph one.
C — Keep them short
Any visitor on a Phase 1 map. Types do not matter if you have no wings and four hats. C-tier means short OPEN, not “never unlock.” Unlock toasts are achievements you want; the visitors themselves can still be usher-on-sight while the floor is a blizzard.
A dawdling anyone is C until ushered. Ushering is in tips.
How to apply ranks during OPEN
- Fundraising for an S-job upgrade: prefer Apprentice waves, CLOSE, buy, stay CLOSED.
- Fundraising for a wing: you need more gold; accept A/B visitors, then CLOSE immediately after the chain purchase so the new slots fill.
- Post-finale achievement hunt: everyone is S because the floor can take it. Farm Hundred Happy Readers only then.
If two types are on the floor and you can only usher one, usher the dawdler, not the one mid-sit with a pending payout.
What we will not fabricate
Exact gold tables per type except the observed Cat +600 line. Spawn timers. Hidden seventh types. If a patch adds a reader, it will toast an Appears achievement and we will add them. Until then, six is six.
Readers are the reason the door is a lever. Rank them as weather: useful rain, deadly flood. The walkthrough tells you which season of the run you are in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for the idle library.
How many reader types are in Spellbound & Shelved?
Six unlockable types, matching the Steam *Appears* achievements. Details on the reader roster.
Is the Cat the best customer?
Best payout we have seen in the log (+600), worst manners on a small map. Rank B until your wings and speed can absorb the mess.
Should I keep the door OPEN to unlock every type?
Use short OPEN bursts. Permanent OPEN delays the finale. Policy: door-sign strategy.
