Spellbound & Shelved Door Sign Planner
A rhythm for the plaque that pays you and unshelves you.
If you only remember one Spellbound & Shelved system, remember the plaque. This planner turns the door-sign strategy into a repeatable rhythm so you do not live on OPEN because diamonds feel like progress.
Use it with a shopping list from the upgrade planner. A burst without a purchase is just vandalism with extra steps.
Rhythm cards
Phase 1 — blizzard
OPEN: short, until the next hire or first speed node. If a Cat cannot even exist yet, still treat Apprentices as messy.
CLOSED: majority of the clock. Tab out. Let Fizzwick and Nutmeg work.
Usher: anyone still on a rug after the flip.
Pep-talk: once, at the start of CLOSED.
Phase 2 — shop is open
OPEN: medium bursts aimed at a wing or an A-job upgrade. Stop when the mosaic hides the moon runner.
CLOSED: until wood grain returns.
Usher: dawdlers, not mid-sit Cats if you still need the +600.
Pep-talk: after each flip to CLOSED, on the worst pile.
Phase 3 — last thousand
OPEN: tiny top-ups only.
CLOSED: default.
Usher: aggressive. A tourist in this phase is a leak.
Pep-talk: freely; the run is almost over and sprints are joy.
Post-finale / achievement mop-up
OPEN: allowed to live here. Farm Appears leftovers and Hundred Happy Readers.
CLOSED: whenever the screenshot looks ugly.
You already won the academy.
Flip triggers (print these)
Flip to OPEN when:
- You can name the next purchase in one sentence.
- Gold cannot buy it.
- The floor currently shows wood (you have spare entropy budget).
Flip to CLOSED when:
- The purchase landed.
- The runner rug disappears under covers.
- A high-chaos reader (Cat, overlapping types) just paid.
- You do not have a next purchase. Idle on CLOSED, not OPEN.
Anti-patterns
- OPEN to fix a mess. That creates more mess. CLOSED fixes mess.
- CLOSED forever at 20 gold. You will never hire. Short OPEN is required.
- Ignoring the log. Reader fanfare means you are in income weather. Filing spam means tidy weather. Match the plaque to the weather.
- Chasing tip coins across an OPEN floor. Tips are optional; see tips.
Pairing with visitors
If A Cat Appears toasts during a Phase 1 save, you got lucky or you stayed OPEN too long. Usher, CLOSE, survive. If it toasts in Phase 2 with wings live, take the sitting, take the +600, CLOSE. Reader identities: reader roster.
Pairing with space
Never OPEN into a freshly unchained wing. Fill the new slots CLOSED first. Otherwise readers discover a buffet you just paid to build.
This planner is boring on purpose. Boring plaques clear 6,655 books. Exciting plaques create gift shops. When the last cover lifts, you can leave the door OPEN as a victory lap. Until then, burst, tidy, repeat.
A 15-minute drill
Minute 0–3: CLOSED, watch the log. If you see only filing lines, the plaque is correct.
Minute 3–6: OPEN with a written purchase from the upgrade planner. Stop early if the moon runner vanishes.
Minute 6–12: CLOSED, one pep-talk, usher anyone still on a gold rug.
Minute 12–15: If the purchase still is not bought, a second short OPEN. If it is bought, stay CLOSED and enjoy wood grain.
Repeat the drill until Phase 3, then delete the OPEN minutes. That is the whole tool. It fits a 1–3 hour game because the game is not asking you to theorycraft a 40-hour battle pass. It is asking you to stop treating the till like a high score.
If you fail the drill, the failure mode is almost always “I left OPEN while I made tea.” Make tea on CLOSED. The hats do not need you for that part. They need you for the flip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for the idle library.
How long should an OPEN burst last?
Until the named purchase is affordable or the mosaic hides the runner — whichever comes first. Strategy prose: door-sign guide.
Can I leave the game on CLOSED overnight?
A full run is 1–3 hours, but save-anytime and play-at-your-own-pace mean you can tab out on CLOSED whenever you want.
What if I need gold and the floor is already buried?
CLOSE first until gnomes recover, then a short OPEN. Buying speed makes the next burst safer.
