Reader Types

Income and mess have the same source. That sentence on the Steam page is the reader roster in one breath. Spellbound & Shelved unlocks six customer types. Each one toasts an Appears achievement. Each one pays diamonds and then treats your shelves like a buffet.

This page is the bestiary. For gold-versus-chaos ranks, use the reader tier list. For the lever that admits them, use the door-sign guide.

The six

Apprentice — An Apprentice Appears. The on-ramp. Small, early, teaches you that OPEN is not free. Let them live during Phase 1 fundraising. Usher if they camp a desk after CLOSED.

Frog Scholar — A Frog Scholar Appears. Mid-run novelty with the same job as everyone else: pay, pull books. Do not over-read the joke. A scholar still leaves a mosaic.

Ghost — A Ghost Appears. Late enough that you should already know how to CLOSE. Spooky lighting does not change the ledger. If you OPEN only to photograph one, keep the burst short.

Owl — An Owl Appears. Reader energy. Useful diamonds when gnome speed is online. Dangerous when it is not. Pair with upgrade priority before you celebrate.

Gnome Tourist — A Gnome Tourist Appears. A hat on holiday. Thematically adorable, mechanically a customer. They do not file for you. Your staff still has to repair their visit.

Cat — A Cat Appears. Includes Lom the Cat, observed reading On the Nature of Levitation in one sitting for +600 diamonds. That log line is the best confirmed payout we have. It is also a mess event. Usher after the sitting if you already CLOSED. Ranked carefully on the tier list because the number is seductive.

Unlock logic we can defend

Appears trophies imply a sequence tied to library growth, not a random debug spawn. If you are still staring at chains and 20 gold, you will not see a Cat. Play the walkthrough phases. Short OPEN bursts in Phase 2 are how later types meet a room that can survive them.

First Satisfied Reader and Hundred Happy Readers count volume across types. They are not an excuse to live on OPEN. Details: achievements.

Managing a visitor on the floor

  1. Identify OPEN vs CLOSED. If you meant to tidy, flip first.
  2. If they are mid-sit and you need the payout, wait. Lom’s +600 is the example.
  3. If they are dawdling after the till ticks, usher. Tips.
  4. If three types overlap and the mosaic is back, you fundraised too long. CLOSED, pep-talk gnomes, do not OPEN to “fix” it.

Flavor

Titles they read are jokes: levitation, bezoars, vanishing acts. They are not quest items. Crystal desks and circular rugs are where sittings happen — useful for camera hunts, not a hidden combat arena.

We will not invent stats like “Ghost unshelves 12 books per second” without a UI number. When the game prints a number, we quote it. Until then, treat types as unlock flags plus the Cat payout observation.

Readers are why the academy drowned. They are also why you can afford chains. Welcome them with a shopping list, then show them the door plaque.

A sitting, from the gnome’s point of view

A visitor claims a circular rug. The crystal on the desk flares. The log may stay quiet until the sitting ends, then print a title and a diamond burst. During that window the customer is still a vandal: books leave nearby cases. That is why ushering mid-sit is a real trade — you cancel a payout to save a mosaic. Phase 1 should cancel more often. Phase 3 should cancel almost always unless you still need an Appears toast.

If two sittings overlap, you are in weather, not in a tutorial. CLOSE. Pep-talk the nearest hat from the gnome roster. Shop nothing until wood grain returns. The readers will still exist on the next OPEN burst; they are not a limited-time raid boss.
