Spellbound & Shelved Gnomes and Readers
The hats who file, and the customers who undo them.
Spellbound & Shelved is a people-watching idle. You do not fight. You watch red-hatted gnomes waddle, haul teetering stacks, and bow, while six kinds of reader pay for the right to ruin the shelves. This hub splits that cast in two:
- Gnome roster — Fizzwick, Bramble, Nutmeg, Pippin, Snorri, Thimble, Wobble, Juniper, mastery trophies, pep-talks.
- Reader roster — Apprentice, Frog Scholar, Ghost, Owl, Gnome Tourist, Cat (including Lom), and why they are the economy.
Rankings that treat those people as shopping and weather live on the Tier List Hub. This hub is identity and behavior.
Why the cast matters
The store promise is “you manage, they work.” Named gnomes in the activity log are how the game teaches you it is alive. When Bramble files Errata & Marginalia on Vanishing Acts “right where it belongs,” that is the loop succeeding. When Lom the Cat finishes On the Nature of Levitation for +600, that is the loop cashing out and setting a small fire.
If you cannot tell hats apart yet, sit on CLOSED for a minute and read the log. The getting started page is the room; this hub is the census.
Staff versus visitors
Gnomes are on your payroll in spirit even if the UI talks in diamonds rather than salaries. They persist. Mastery achievements imply a relationship: Fizzwick Mastered, Bramble Mastered. Pep-talk them. Point them at new wings. They are the reason CLOSED works.
Readers are unlocks. They appear as Steam toasts and then become weather. You do not master a Ghost. You survive a Ghost, or you usher a Ghost, or you OPEN specifically to meet a Ghost for the trophy and then CLOSE. The reader tier list is the short version of that policy.
How to use these pages mid-run
Stuck on labor: open gnomes, hire, pep-talk, check whether you are under-winged instead. Stuck on gold: open readers, OPEN the door, remember Cats are grenades. Stuck on trophies: achievements plus the Appears list on the reader page. Stuck on the whole evening: walkthrough.
There is no second manager to assign roles to. Single-player means you run the library alone. The hats do not need voice chat. They need a plaque that sometimes says CLOSED.
Flavor versus systems
Book titles in the log are flavor. Do not hunt A Field Guide to Misdrawn Marks as an item. Do hunt the gnome who keeps filing it, because that hat is doing the job. Crystal colors on cases are wayfinding, not a combat element. Red hats are the silhouette the box art promised; if you came from a different game named Spellbound, this is the library one.
When needmoar.games adds a hat or a visitor, it will show up in the log or the achievement strip. Until then, the roster is the names we can photograph.
Meet the staff, then meet the mess. The academy is both.
