Shelf Wings

Early screenshots of Spellbound & Shelved show a chained bookcase on the right wall: metal links, a dim rack, a lonely crystal. That is a shelf wing. The Steam page says there are 15, chained shut until you buy their chains off. This list ranks when to unchain, not a fictional tour of named halls we have not been given.

Wings are space. Space is how gnomes stop walking laps around a two-rack closet. Space is also how readers find more books to yank down. Unchaining is never free entropy.

S — Unchain when shelves are the bottleneck

If hats are stacked in a queue at the only open case, buy the chain. If the log repeats the same shelf neighborhood while the far floor stays a mosaic, buy the chain. If you just mastered Fizzwick or Bramble and they still cannot park a stack, you need a wing more than another leaf on the upgrade web.

The first wing you can see from New Game is S-tier as soon as early speed exists. It is C-tier if you unchain it at 20 gold with one gnome and an OPEN door.

A — Side wings that finish a rug cluster

The isometric room is built from runner rugs and circular desks. Wings that complete a cluster (so a gnome can file a color of crystal without crossing the whole moon carpet) are A. They shorten pathing. Buy them in Phase 2 of the walkthrough after you can CLOSED-tidy the original footprint.

B — Trophy and symmetry wings

Some chains exist so the academy looks finished from the title-screen camera. If the floor count is already crashing and you just want the library to match the box art, these are B. They are also B if you are hunting visual satisfaction for a screenshot, not seconds.

C — Speculative unchaining during a blizzard

Buying three wings because “15 is the content” during Phase 1 is how you create a warehouse of covers. Each new rack is a new place for readers to vandalize. If you cannot staff it, it is a liability. Leave it chained. The chain is a mercy.

The buy test (use this, not vibes)

Ask four questions before the purchase:

  1. Do current racks overflow? If no, spend on gnome speed instead.
  2. Do I have hats for the new walk? If no, hire from the gnome roster first.
  3. Is the door about to stay OPEN? If yes, wait. Unchain into a CLOSED period so the first books on the new wing actually stay.
  4. Is this wing my next gold sink on the shopping list? If you are unchaining because the model looks cool in the corner of the camera, it is C today.

How wings interact with readers

More shelves make the library more attractive and more fragile. A Cat payout of +600 in a two-wing room is a grenade. The same payout in a fully unchained academy is a rounding error if speed nodes are live. That is why reader S-tier on the reader list depends on your wing count.

CLOSED after an unchain is mandatory. You just created empty slots. Let Nutmeg and Pippin fill them before you invite the Owl.

Map reading without a named atlas

We will not fabricate wing titles like “East Astrology Annex” unless the game prints them. What you can read in-world: chains, crystal color on the case, and whether the rack is on the runner or a side wall. Use those landmarks when you pep-talk a gnome toward a new purchase.

For the gold that buys chains, stay on upgrade priority. For the evening you stop seeing metal links at all, the walkthrough is the clock.

Leave some chains up until the hats ask for them. The academy did not drown in 6,655 books because it lacked wall space. It drowned because nobody managed the door.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for the idle library.

How many shelf wings are there?

Fifteen, per the Steam page. They stay chained until you buy the chains off.

Should I unchain every wing as soon as I see it?

No. Unchain when racks overflow and you have gnomes to walk the new path. Otherwise buy speed upgrades.

Do wings have official names?

Not in the public store copy. Use chains, crystal color, and room position as landmarks until a patch labels them.
